Beans
Beans takes place at the height of the 1990 Mohawk Resistance at Kanehsatà:ke (also known as the Oka Crisis), a 78-day standoff between Indigenous land defenders, Quebec police, the RCMP and the Canadian military, over the proposed expansion of a golf course on to a Mohawk burial ground. Twelve-year-old Tekehentahkhwa (nicknamed “Beans”) is forced into an early coming of age by these events, as her innocence turns to anger over the treatment of her people.

2024 Spotlight: Films that A.I. Could Never Make
“The power of the human spirit will never be obsolete!” – Manborg (2013)
With A.I. creeping into all aspects of our lives, there’s been a worldwide discussion about how it will impact art, and films in particular. However, we know that there is no algorithm that can replicate the creativity, diversity, and originality of Canadian filmmakers. Nothing can replace the passion, soul, and personal vision that is at the heart of these 50 Canadian films made by Canadian humans for Canadian humans.
So this CanFilmDay, prove you’re not a bot by watching a great Canadian film!
