An Afternoon at the Movies @ Beaty In-Person

A weekly movie series showcasing a variety of films: classics, dramas, romantic comedies, action, and hidden gems.

This month, classic movies from the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's have been selected.

June 7 - The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)
2h (120minutes). Thriller/Drama.
Ben McKenna (James Stewart), an American doctor, and his family stumble into the middle of an assassination plot while vacationing in Marrakech. When his son is kidnapped by the conspirators, McKenna must race against the clock to stop the murder and save his son's life. Stewart, as one might expect, gives a seamless performance as the average man thrown into exceptional circumstances. Doris Day brings a bit of levity and performs the only musical number to appear in a Hitchcock film

June 14  - Once More with Feeling (1960)
1h36m (92 minutes). Romance/DramaComedy
Yul Brynner plays a musical genius whose eccentricities are kept in check by his wife (Kay Kendall), until she discovers him "auditioning" a sultry young pianist. She walks out on him and his career promptly starts skidding. The temperamental maestro must again win his scorned wife.

June 21 - The Great Train Robbery (1979)
1h51m (111 minutes). Crime/Thriller/Comedy
Edward Pierce (Sean Connery) is a master thief of the Victorian Era who's never found a heist he couldn't pull off. For his next criminal operation, he plans something that has never been done before: to rob a moving train. Working with a master safecracker (Donald Sutherland) and a seductress (Lesley-Anne Down), Pierce devises an incredibly complex plan to break into the train's safe and steal the thousands of dollars' worth of gold that are contained within.

June 28 - The Big Chill (1983)

103 minutes. Drama/Comedy
A once close-knit gang of friends -- including an actor (JoBeth Williams), a doctor (Glenn Close) and her husband (Kevin Kline), a Vietnam veteran (William Hurt), and a journalist (Tom Berenger) -- meet for a weekend after the funeral of their much-envied friend Alex. The friends spend the weekend confronting the personal truths, sacrifices and betrayals that have left them disenchanted. Each must contend with unresolved issues they have with Alex and with one another.
